Ken Ledbetter's Yarn Bowls are made in a variety of woods, but mainly maple and mesquite.  They come in various shapes and sizes.  All have a "J" hook cut out of one side, to pull yarn through.  (if you buy one, try not to pick the bowl up from the edge by the "J" hook.  The bowl is not as stable there.)  These bowls are bottom heavy so they will stay in place when you are using them.
